October is Careers in Construction Month

Written by: Farah Vitale

Governor Sandoval announced October is now “Careers in Construction” month for Nevada. There will be a special Career Day for the first time ever for Washoe County middle and high schools. The job fair was at the Reno Livestock Event Center on Oct. 25th all day long. The state wants people to know there’s a variety of careers available in the field.

Construction employment in Nevada rose 9.4% in 2016.

The fair has sessions for Washoe School District and hands on sessions for students to learn the field. The state wants to keep the numbers up and find more skilled workers to fill positions. There is a shortage of skilled and trained workers in Nevada. Many area builders are hiring to train and having workers learn from the bottom up. This helps the workers learn the field properly. Eventually the trainees become the trainers and over time the company grows. Many workers choose construction jobs as a temporary line of work but the state is working to change that. With a good starting pay of around $16 an hour in training and raises, there’s plenty of opportunity to grow within in the field.

The job fair also helped students become aware of construction as a career choice. The field requires skill and knowledge, something schools usually don’t tell students about. The industry has long been overlooked. With the state intervening and the number of jobs increasing in the field, we know this is good news for Nevada. Our unemployment has been slightly increasing over this year so this is a great time to once again re-evaluate what job opportunities are available in Nevada and which ones aren’t being recognized.
