The UNR Cooperative Extension is offering a workshop on how to start your own food business. The class will give key points on how to make and sell different food items and run a business. We’re in a period where more growers are starting to make and sell food items. People want a decent profit from their personal secret recipe and the new Cottage Food and craft Laws are making that possible.

The new laws are making it much easier for people to sell their own home goods and it’s specifics. UNR’s workshop will dissect these laws and help people understand what to focus on and how to make the most of their food business. All businesses need a game plan for success.

The Cottage Food and Craft Laws have many people ready to start selling their own food recipes. There are specific guidelines to follow, such as registering with the Washoe County Health District to sell cottage foods. There are also many limitations as to where you can sell since selling to a business requires a health inspection.

Foods that can’t be sold as cottage foods are: homefoods2

-Home canned foods and sauces

-Pickled items

-Breads/cakes/pies made with home canned food ingredients

-Apple cider

-Dried or dehydrated meats or chicken (jerky)

-Apple (fruit) butters, pumpkin butter or other fruit butters

-Foods containing cream cheese frosting, uncooked egg, custard or meringue

The workshops are in the Churchill County Cooperative Extension office, 111 Sheckler Road in Fallon, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 2nd and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Nov. 3rd.
