Tax Day 2016 is Today, Not April 15

Today, April 18, is Tax Day 2016.

Due to Emancipation Day falling on Saturday, April 16 this year, it had to be pushed to the typical Tax Day, April 15. This in turn, pushed Tax Day to Monday, April 18.

Emancipation Day is observed in commemoration of of the signing of the Emancipation Act by President Abraham Lincoln. The deadline for paying taxes to the Internal Revenue Services has been bumped another three days to land on today. For those residents of Maine and Massachusetts, Patriots Day is celebrated on April 18. This pushes their Tax Day deadline back four days to April 19.

Taxpayers must submit tax information, or file for an extension today to avoid penalties. If you do file an extension, the new deadline is October 17. This is the final deadline for individual tax returns for 2015. You can e-file up to that day. However, after October 17, you have to submit a paper return.

The IRS does not have a deadline for overdue returns from prior years. There are penalties and interest due from late payers. To claim a refund from a year that wasn’t filed, do so within three years of the due date. Waiting longer means forfeiting refunds.
