South Lake Tahoe Brewing Company to Open Soon

Written By: Farah Vitale

South Lake Tahoe Brewing Company, located on Lake Tahoe Boulevard, will hold a soft opening at the end of March. Chris and Nicole Smith decided to start a the brewing company four years ago and signed a lease back in June of 2016. After getting their building permit in December and concrete poured in January, they were able to install a trench stream for draining the fermentation tanks. Their next step is to dry wall,  paint and pour the bar. After that, they’re won’t be much left to do before the big grand opening  held in mid April.

Chris focuses on brewing recipes while Nicole runs the financial side.

The unfiltered West Coast style Angora IPA will be the first beer of tap at South Lake. It’s brewed with cascade, centennial, Chinook, citra hops and notes of pine forest and citrus. The next beers are also sure to be winners:

  • Marlette Blonde – a balanced blonde ale with notes of honey, pear, tangerine, and a sweet after taste.
  • Barrett Brown – a full bodied brown ale made of top of cocoa nibs and toasted coconut with notes of dark chocolate, caramel, oatmeal cookies, and coconut creme. Tastes like German chocolate cake!
  • Emigrant Saison -a tarte farmhouse ale brewed with oats, white wheat and southern hemisphere hops. It has an earthy and acidic taste.

The couple is also partnering with Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association and will sponsor them. They will create a unique beer (not yet known) just for them and the proceeds of the sales will be a fundraiser for making trails in the area. The Smiths are considering partnering with local restaurants to hold pop-ups. This would be a great opportunity for them to meet their customers and introduce themselves to the community.

South Lake Brewing Company  has already started a membership program, The Bär Society, in December. Members get 15 percent off any purchase (beer and merchandise), in person or online for $125. They also get a cool growler and entry to special member events.
