Bab Café Opening First U.S. Location in Reno

Written By: Farah Vitale

Bab Café, a Korean Café, is opening in Reno this April in Third Street Flats. Hana Garden, located in Sparks, was the only Korean place in the area for several years. Then this last year, Korean spots Ijji 4 Korean Bar-B-Que and Siu Korean BBQ opened in Reno and Sparks. So Korean food slowly became more and more popular in Northern Nevada. This will be their first U.S. location and it’s an exciting new option for locals. The owner, Jay Ryu already owns five Bab Cafés in Seoul, South Korea.

His friend, owner of Tha Joint sushi in Sparks, helped Ryu open Bab Café in Reno.

Ryu is from Korea but went to college here and earned a finance degree from the University of Nevada in 2008. He then returned to Korea to become a restaurateur but now lives in Reno again, in the Northwest area. The building for his restaurant is 2,100 square feet and a casual dining spot. It will be located inside Third Street Flats on the ground floor level. The entire Third Street Flats will be opening in April of this year.

Ryu will be keeping his business authentic with a real Korean chef and he will already have an internal customer base from the residents of Third Street Flats. The menu will include about 10 rice bowls made with various vegetables and proteins. The word Bab in Korean translates to “bowl of rice” or “served with rice.”  There will also be about four to five side dishes available along with Korean teas. Since the success of Korean food in the Reno-Sparks area, this is sure to be an exciting offering to downtown Reno.
