Vet Receives Free Home After Struggle With PTSD

Written By: Farah Vitale

The Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals (VAREP) gave a Reno vet a newly remodeled home mortgage free. Sergeant Leif Apag served in the army for six years and did a tour in Iraq. When he came home from his time serving, he suffered from PTSD and had some financial troubles. His struggle has also been hard on his family and so this gift helped the family greatly. The VAREP, local Home Depot stores, the Nevada Housing Division, and many volunteers all got together to help.

It took seven months of hard work for them to create the Vet’s dream home.

Apag, his wife, and their 16-month-old daughter are grateful to have a new chapter in their lives. The workers and volunteers were excited to help Aspag and put detail into the new house. They added in toys and books for his daughter along with food in the fridge for the family. They really wanted this house to be a everything the family wanted and needed. And right now Aspag is studying to become a nurse so he can provide for him family.

The VAREP is a a non-profit organization that helps the active-military and veteran communities. So they work to help vets become homeowners, learn how to manage their finances, understand VA loans and get jobs. They develop programs that reduce barriers to homeowning for vets. They also provide housing education with both live and online courses. The topics are foreclosure prevention, financial literacy, and understanding credit. The VAREP also work with the financial service sector to help employment and implement legislation.
