Tesla Opens Opportunity and Growth for Reno

Written By: Farah Vitale

Reno is continuing to transform. With new companies moving into the cities, our unemployment rate is below 4 percent for the first time since 2006. Tesla has helped a lot for Reno, formerly a fading casino town. Mayor Schieve said that Reno really had nowhere to go but up! Reno’s first great success was in 2014 when the highly automated factory run by Ardagh Group SA came to town. They that make 3.5 million cans of tomato paste and other food products a day.

Reno’s big break was with Tesla in 2014, increasing jobs.

Tesla Inc. chose the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center to build the largest factory in the world. It promised to create 6,500 permanent jobs in exchange for $1.3 billion in tax incentives. So now the fastest job growth in the region comes from manufacturing, employing almost 15,000 workers. That’s a 15 percent increase in the past two years. People are moving and staying in Reno as businesses have been flourishing.

There’s factory and manufacturing jobs, a growing local bar scene, and places like The Eddy and The Basement. The Eddy combines day drinking downtown with games. The Basement is a unique underground venue which explores hand craft. There’s fashion, a barbershop, chocolate shop all in one spot. So it’s easy to see my more UNR grads are staying in Reno after graduating. There’s job availability, especially for engineering students because of jobs available at Tesla and Panasonic. Reno has completely turned a new leaf and there’s so much more to come.
