Tahoe Ridge’s First New Campground after Over 20 years

550-Site Campground to grace the ridge of the Tahoe Rim.

After over 20 years, Lake Tahoe’s gorgeous north shore is getting a new campground! Currently in the Tahoe Basin are 18 campgrounds with 2,066 sites between them, but only 46 (2%) of these campsites are between Tahoe City and Zephyr Cove. This has been realized over the years as a shortage and imbalance of camping opportunities on the lake’s north shore.

Only 2% of Lake Tahoe’s campsites fall between Tahoe City and Zephyr Cove. The 550-site Brockway Campground will strive to balance the lake a bit more.

Mountainside Partners and Sierra Pacific Industries (landowner) have applied to build a 550-site campground on a ridge near the Tahoe Rim Trail, just south of Northstar California Ski Resort. The Brockway Campground located near the Brockway Summit (which is incidentally the turnaround point for the cycling portion of this years IRONMAN Lake Tahoe) will bring the forested ridge to life with a “range of camping experiences [that will] be designed to fit with the beautiful natural setting”, said Blake Riva, senior partner for Mountainside Partners. The grounds will include a mix of tent sites and prefabricated “eco-shelters”, a swimming pool, dining area, general store and pavilions.

This eco-friendly campground will occupy approximately 104 acres and will be designed by Bud Surles. Surles was previously superintendent at Yellowstone National Park and chief of concessions for the National Park Service.

The campground would be situated close to the Tahoe Rim trail and would act as a welcomed support system for hikers and backpackers to rest and refuel. Other amenities that hikers can enjoy are drinkable water, secure parking, and long term storage via bear boxes.

The campground is still in the very early stages of planning as it will have to be approved by both Placer County and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, even though it is an allowed use under the zoning currently in place, which would allow for 832 campsites. ” The Brockway Campground has the potential to truly become one of the most iconic campgrounds in the West,” Surles said.
