Reno’s First Ever Container Park Opens in Spring
Written By: Farah Vitale
A new gathering park is opening up in a vacant lot in downtown Reno. The park will be called The Eddy and constructed out of shipping containers. The venue will feature two bocce ball courts, three bar areas, and cool artwork by local artists. Special events will be hosted there such as farmers markets, food trucks, yoga classes and so much more. During the day it’s family fun and at night, it will turn into a drinking spot for people 21 and over. The half-acre lot is located on the south side of the Truckee River at 16 South Sierra St. It’s next to the Wild River Grille and the Riverside Artist Lofts.
This will be a perfect summertime park, right by the Riverwalk.
The location is already popular for walking the river. It sparked the idea to make it an even better for the entire community to enjoy. The project was delayed due to concerns from nearby businesses and residents of the Riverside Artist Lofts about the loud noise and the bar aspect of the project. Reno City Council ended up approving the project last June. They made conditions to the permit which included revising the hours of operation to between 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
The plan so far is to open sometime in April but it will depend on the weather. Construction started in February for the new lot and the developers in signed a 5-year lease for the property last year. After it ends, they will be looking into a new spot for The Eddy in Reno. But for right now, they are excited to see how it better connects Reno to the Riverwalk District!
