Olympic Sized Skating Rink Coming to South Reno
Written By: Farah Vitale
Washoe County Commissioners have voted to start building an Olympic-sized ice skating rink in South Reno. On April 25th, the county approved negotiations to secure land for the rink at the South Reno Valleys Complex next to the South Valleys Library. The rink will also be NHL regulated. This will come just in time for the new local hockey team forming in Reno next year.
The County is hoping this rink will attract people from all over the country.
With a new hockey team coming up, jobs at Tesla and Switch, Reno is becoming quite a destination point. People interested in moving to Reno will also be glad to have this rink as a place to play for their kids. As downtown Reno is undergoing renovations to connect more to the University, South Reno isn’t being overlooked. This rink will be a great addition to the area. Teh City of Reno and Washoe County Commissionser have been working hard to pick projects that are a major beneficiary to the town. They’ve also been working to add something new to each sector of town.
Joel Grace, the President of the Greater Reno Community Ice Skating Association (GRCISA), stated there were donors waiting until GRCISA had control of the property before they committed to the project. He requested the MOU be finalized within 30 days. So it’s almost in full-swing. The first phase of the project should cost about $6 million. But the total project would cost about $14 million for an Olympic-sized and an NHL regulated sized rink.
