Discovery Museum Creates Program for Kids with Autism

Written By: Farah Vitale

The Discovery Museum has made a new program for autistic kids. It is hard for autistic kids to socialize in loud places. This is a huge struggle for parents, finding a way to let their child play while enjoying themselves. Once a month, the museum will hold an event just for autistic kids. Every Sunday, the museum opens two hours early, at 10:00 a.m., with the lights and sounds turned down, just for autistic kids. This is a great way for kids to ease into a louder and more complex setting.

The Discovery is working to create an enjoyable play place for autistic children.

Then at noon, they will turn the lights back on and the museum opens to the public. They hope by that time the autistic children will be well-adjusted and can play with everyone. The lights and sounds of the museum are very stimulating, making it a great environment for kids but also harsh for autistic kids. The program is called “Discover Your Way” and it is a great way for autistic kids to enjoy sensory-friendly time at the museum while allowing parents to network with each other. Being able to share resources, knowledge and introducing their kids will be a huge benefit of the program.

Discovery members will be able to attend the program free while for nonmembers it’s $12 for adults and $10 for kids. Last weekend was the kick-off for the program and the staff, who came up with the idea, are very passionate it. They hope other museums will use this as a model for the future and offer similar programs.
