Local Ski Resorts get Amped-up for Winter
All across Reno-Tahoe, ski resorts have all kinds of new features.
After five consecutive years of drought, local ski resorts are back to the drawing board and have turned some amazing new snow features for Reno-Tahoe skiers and boarders.
Mount Rose
What’s new?
- New beginner terrain: The Enchanted Forest family area is getting 4 new trails and a realignment of the Wizard lift which will enhance the beginner terrain at the closest resort to Montrêux. This will also shift the beginner traffic toward the west side of Ponderosa.
- Snow-making machines: The addition of 9 new snow-making machines that are fixed onto poles will greatly enhance snow coverage on the mountain. Operators can just flip a switch without having to move the machine into position or connect to a water supply. Thanks to summer grooming, runs will be skiable on only 10 inches of snow.
- Rosebuds: The program for kids aged 4 – 10 is getting a new layout and expansion to their facilities for the 2015- 2016 season.
Squaw Valley & Alpine Meadows
What’s new?
- Siberia Express: The Squaw Valley lift has been upgraded from a 4-person to a 6-person chair lift.
- Improved grooming: Alpine Meadows has added new models of grooming machinery that will provide high-angle grooming on 40 percent less fuel than past years. Alpine Bowl, Sherwood and Wolverine will notice considerable differences in grooming.
- Snow-making guns: Alpine Meadows has 5 new snow-making guns that will enhance the snow-making on the lower section of the Summit run. New fan lifts designed to increase snow-making capacity within Big Blue, Siberia and Headwall loading areas have also been added.
- Live stream cams: New live-streaming cameras with 360-degree, high-definition views have been installed on both mountains to assist skiers and snowboarders with knowing current weather conditions.
Sugar Bowl
What’s new?
- A new terrain park: Below the Mt. Lincoln Express Chairlift that was designed by Snow Park Technologies (who designs for the Winter X Games). This terrain park will contain 43 features when it’s finished.
- Increased coverage of snow-making: Rahlves’ Run and mid-mountain pumphouse will now be included in the existing snow-making coverage.
- Cross country: There will be a new cross country ski rental along with gear and lessons in “Village Station” near the Mt. Disney Express lift. Thor’s Run, a 10 km trail, will be added to the existing Royal Gorge trail system.
