Great Full Gardens Expands to South Reno

Written by: Farah Vitale

South Reno has a new healthy dining option!

Midtown Reno favorite, Great Full Gardens, opens the first week of October in the Smith’s center on South Meadows Parkway. The restaurant uses local, organic ingredients to create their unique menu. They offer several different dietary options including: vegan, paleo and gluten-free options. Vegans and non-vegans alike agree that the restaurant is a hit in Midtown with delicious local food made with quality ingredients. The owners Gino Scala, Juli Scala and Cyndi Wallis hope for the same success and to draw in the same type of crowd they love as the Midtown location.

Some popular dishes on the menu include:

  •    Cheesy Bruschetta: Made with ciabatta bread topped with garlic, tomatoes, balsamic glaze and cashew or mozzarella cheese.
  •    Paleo Lunch Bowl: Made with grilled chicken or wild salmon. The protein is topped with kale, onions, broccoli, mushrooms and cabbage, sauteed in coconut oil.
  •    Thanksgiving Sandwich: Made with golden roast turkey, herb stuffing, cranberry aioli, cranberry, Havarti and green leaf lettuce.

The new location comes with a few changes. The South Reno location is bigger, about 3,400 square feet. The menu also has a few new dishes and craft beers added to the menu for customers to try out.

It all began with soup.

The owners opened the Midtown location in March 2013. The restaurant quickly became a popular spot for locals. The next year they opened a Great Full Gardens Express in the Joe Crowley Student Union in the University of Nevada, Reno. They wanted to give students the a healthier option on campus.

Gino is originally known as Gino the Soup Man. In 2008, he sold popular vegan soups around Reno. In 2010, Gino and his wife opened Pathaway’s Cafe on the UNR campus. Their soups began selling at Great Basin Food Co-Op, Whole Foods, in Roseville and 13 stores in Northern California.

Each soup is unique and uses “Mother Sauce,” a homemade broth. The soups substitute almond milk in place of dairy cream. It allows you to taste more of the vegetables in the soup. The soups are available at Great Full Gardens and Great basin Co-Op.
