Apple Invests $1 Billion Dollars to Expand Data Center

Written By: Farah Vitale

Apple is working to expand it’s data center east of Reno by investing $1 billion dollars! Reno City Council happily agreed to a deal for Google to invest millions of dollars in sales tax abatements for the data center at the Reno Technology Park. It’s located in the Truckee River canyon east of Sparks. Apple needs a larger data center to meet its higher demands for iCloud storage. This is just the latest in tech company expanding to Northern Nevada, now a growing data storage industry hot spot.

Apple will be bringing in hundreds of jobs in operations and construction.

This is more good news for employment in the Reno area. Expanding the data center will create many jobs for residents. It’s going to be an exciting year! Apple is planning to build a warehouse on land in downtown Reno that’s part of a tourism improvement district created in 2009. They are moving computer equipment needed for the data center through that warehouse. Doing so, they will be able to take another 1.5 percent off its sales tax rate. The plan is also to spend $4 million on the warehouse. Apple’s original $1 billion data center was awarded $89 million in state property and sales tax abatements in 2012. When they expand the data center, the value of those abatements will increase.

A month ago, Google purchased 1,210 acres of land at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center for nearly $29.1 million. Northern Nevada also attracted two high profile data center projects last year. Once finished, Switch’s SuperNAP colocation data center at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center will be the largest data center in the world. Cloud services company Rackspace is also planning to build a data center at Reno Technology Park near Apple.
