Hang Out With the Horses

Here in Reno you view mustangs grazing in the arid mountains around the area. Mustangs are symbolic around Reno, one example is the new Renassince hotel. In 1955, Reno resident, Velma Johnston convinced state legislators to stop the roundup of wild horses on state lands for sale to pet-food makers. So federal lawmakers made it official in 1971. So horses have been freely roaming, a beautiful sight. There are tours available or you can go off explore on your own.  You can also find plenty of wild horses along, and even on, Canyon Way, south of Exit 22 on Interstate 80. Sonny Boy Tours The prices range from $56 to $74. They are held at Pyramid Lake, Sanctuary Ranch, Virginia Range.

Tour 1

You can tour wild horse sanctuaries set at the foothills of the towering mountain ranges.  The setting is quiet and peaceful, to connect visitors with animals and nature itself. The ranch is operated with no power lines, city services and limited cell service. The price is $56 per person with a minimum of 2 adults.

Tour 2

This tour is held on Pyramid Lake and the Paiute Tribe reservation. The Paiute, the Washoe, and the Shoshone tribes in the Great Basin region make up the Three Nations of Native Americans in Northern Nevada. Learn more about the history behind the land, tribe and the horses. This tour is $87 per person with a minimum of 2 adults.

Tour 3 & 4

Head to the Truckee Meadows Trail at the Virginia Range for another fun wild horse tour! Wild horses have roamed this range for many years. During the 1860’s as thousands of immigrants headed to the area to search for gold. Many wild horses, or ‘Mustangs’ were seen along the landscape. The Truckee Meadows Trail tour is $63 per person. Annie’s Tour at the Virginia Range is $73 per person.
