The Nugget in Sparks just put up a 105 foot Christmas tree this year, as a new holiday tradition. This is currently the second tallest tree in the United States, only beat by Los Angeles’ 115 feet White Fir tree at the Citadel Outlets mall. The Nugget’s tree is a wild White Fir from Oregon weighing in at 22,000 pounds. It will take a whopping 3,000 LED bulbs to light the tree. Mexico’s tree is taller, at 137 feet, but it’s made up of pieces and wires. So it isn’t quite the same as the Nugget’s entirely real tree.

The tree was a gift to the community from the Marnell family and Nugget Casino Resort. Sparks hopes the new tree will attract people to downtown Sparks and also participate in their holiday events. The city joined for the grand Christmas tree lighting ceremony on December 3rd at 5:30 p.m. in Victorian Avenue in front of Nugget Oyster Bar entrance. This event kick-offed the “12 Nuggets of Christmas,” which is an event every night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. from Dec. 3rd through the 10th. The purpose is to let people donate to 12 different charities, one for each night. The Nugget will be placing a $2000 donation every night.

December 5 – Nevada Humane Society

• They are collecting dog and cat bedding, pet toys, wet kitten food and dry cat food.

December 6 – CARE Chest of Sierra Nevada

• They are collecting adult diapers, wheelchairs, shower and commode seats, transfer benches, scooters, electric wheelchairs, and diabetic-testing supplies.

December 7 – Friends of Washoe County Library

• Christmas Carols by: Billinghurst Middle School
• They are collecting children’s books.

December 8 – Big Brothers Big Sisters

• They are collecting new unwrapped toys, gift cards for children ages 8-16 years old.

December 9 – Sparks Rotary

• They are collecting new and gently used fishing gear and poles or $5.00 donations to purchase fishing poles for the next Rotary Club of Sparks Kids Free Fishing Day event.

December 10 – Community Food Pantry

• They are collecting food and cash donations.

December 11 – Canine Rehabilitation Center & Sanctuary

• They are collecting dog treats and chews/bones (no rawhide), Mop Heads, Flea and Tick Medication (all sizes), gift cards to Lowe’s and Home Depot, Bleach.

December 12 – Give Hope Foundation

• Christmas Carols by: Van Gorder Elementary School Choir
• They are collecting toys and holiday gifts, for ages infant to 17-years old. Cash donations are accepted.

December 13 – Food Bank of Northern Nevada

• Christmas Carols by: Girl Scout Troop 398
• They are collecting food and cash donations.

December 14 – Reno Rodeo Foundation

• They are collecting new clothing, jeans, shirts, socks, underwear. Cash donations are accepted and used to purchase clothing for kids.
