Reno-Tahoe International Airport Thriving

Reno-Tahoe International Airport passenger numbers increase for the fifth month in a row.

Reno’s growing economy and booming housing market may be responsible for the increase in passengers seen at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) in the last year. October 2015 saw a 10.9 percent increase in passenger travel compared to October 2014, and over all there has been 2,892,731 passengers which is up 2.7 percent overall from the previous year. “Thanks to the support from the community, the airlines at RNO are preforming well and flights are operating with a healthy load factor of 86 percent…We are looking forward to continuing high passenger and cargo counts through the holidays,” said president and CEO of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, Marily Mora.

In addition to the increased passenger count, the airport has also experienced an increase in the amount of cargo they are transporting. Up 5.9 percent from October 2014, with 12,160,586 pounds of cargo in October 2015 alone.

2015 was also a great year for Reno-Tahoe International Airport in that JetBlue now serves the first ever nonstop flights from Reno to New York. The cost-efficient airline known for its exceptional customer service is creating a vector from thriving Reno, NV to the focal point of the financial world. This is the perfect puzzle piece Reno has been looking for and has noticed an increase in business travel and in influx of new corporations to the area since May when JetBlue first flew round trip from RNO to JFK.

With even more to come on connecting Reno to various aspects of the business world, June 2016 will bring with it three daily nonstop flights from Reno to Oakland, California via Southwest Airlines. “This is a strong signal of diversification and of economic development in the community…It says (Southwest and Oakland) are reinvesting and seeing a lot of promise in our community,” Mora said in December. With Tesla and Switch coming from the Bay Area, it’s wonderful to have the direct connection for those traveling to and from Reno.

With 8 airlines, 57 daily flights (17 of which are now non-stop), its very clear that Reno’s economy and the Reno-Tahoe International Airport have a bright future.
