Veterans Honored on First Native American Flight

Written By: Farah Vitale

On Nov. 10, there was a Native-American Honor flight that took veterans to Washington D.C.  There they visited the National Museum of the American Indian and attended the Veteran’s Day ceremony. Not many people are aware of how many Native-Americans volunteer to serve our country. This was an honor that needed to be made. The trip gave Native veterans a special chance to share war stories with each other and bond. This was very special for the young vets to be able to compare their experiences with those of older generations.

This is the first ever honor flight for Native veterans.

There were 43 veterans of all ages aboard the new Southwest plane, Nevada One to D.C. The museum they went to upon landing held several exhibits, art, and media about the background of many native tribes. The Veteran’s Day Ceremony had special tributes to World War II, the Air Force, and the Navy. The event pays a special tribute to women in the military. The tribute includes formal honors, a keynote address, veteran’s remarks and a wreath laying. People told stories about soldiers and their current struggles in Iraq. Children of the veterans shared stories in their own voices from a dark time. The weekend closed with the vets placing a sash on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The Pyramid Lake Veterans and Warriors Organization made this flight happen for the vets and for the public. They held a party on Sunday, Nov. 13 at the Reno Tahoe Airport to welcome them home. There were members from the Nevada Guard, Civil Air Patrol, drummers and singers from the Native American community and more. It was truly a heartfelt tribute.
