The 28th franchise of the United Soccer League is coming to the Biggest Little City.

In March of 2017 Aces Stadium will be home to both professional baseball and professional soccer teams. The $2 million dollar expansion to the current stadium is coming courtesy of Aces co-owner Herb Simon who believes that this franchise will be an investment in the downtown area of Reno. (Good news for local tax payers, it will be funded by private investors.) Soccer is one of the fastest growing sports in America and Reno is so excited to be on board. Richard Jay, commissioner of the Great Basin Youth Soccer League (GBYSL) has offered up the leagues current home field, the Moana Sports Complex, to be the practice field for the future professional team. “I can’t even begin to describe how excited I am, how excited we are, and how excited this community is… The support has been overwhelming,” Jay said. With 7,500 kids registered in the GBYSL this year (a number that is expected to grow in the coming years) this franchise could be an inspiration to the youth players in our community. It could give them the drive and motivation to play at the higher levels.

The United Soccer League is the top level of minor league professional soccer, similar to what Triple-A is in baseball (the Reno Aces are a Triple-A team) and the league struck a player-development deal in 2013 which would allow players to move up from USL to Major League Soccer, which is the top tier of professional soccer in America. The season consists of 30 games, 15 of which will be home games that will draw a crowd, not only to the stadium, but to the downtown area. The sport is sought to bring more youth to downtown Reno as well as revenue to the local businesses. Reno Aces President Eric Edelstein believes that the economic impact of soccer is going to be 20 percent greater than baseball is currently.

The 2017 soccer season will overlap with the baseball season, but the stadium and its owners have full confidence that they can make it work, and work well. “We feel confident we will be able to transition back and forth between baseball and soccer providing both with top notched playing facilities…We wouldn’t be pursuing this if we didn’t think that they could co-exist together and both have quality surfaces,” said Edelstein.

The team does not yet have a name or colors and there are still a lot of decisions that need to be made regarding the team, the stadium and the co-existence of soccer and baseball in one facility. “We’ll have more to announce related to name, colors, tickets, etc…But a lot still has to be determined and we’ll have time to do it right since we won’t launch until 2017 season,” Edelstein said. The team name will be decided by the fans in a “Name the Team” contest. Fans can submit their choice for team name and be entered to win season tickets! Click here to to submit a team name.
