Gov. Sandoval declares the month of April as Parkinson’s Awareness Month in an effort to search for a cure to Parkinson’s disease. Sandoval spoke at an event at Summit Estates about it last week in Reno. Parkinson’s is a chronic and progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. Local Assisted Living and Memory Care Community, and the Referral Center of the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) all attended.

 About 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year.

This includes the Mayor of Sparks, Geno Martini. He was diagnosed back in 2012 but made the announcement about his disease in 2015. This also includes Sandoval’s own father, which is another reason this is a special mission for him. During this event, Neurologist and VA Medical Director, John Peacock, MD, PhD, Dr. Amy Sanquinetti, MD, and Sheila Young, PhD, along with Sandoval recognized the work of those helping to find a cure. In Nevada there are 11,000 to 12,000 thousand people over the age of 60 that are diagnosed and living with the disease.

APDA will host an Optimism Walk at Virginia Lake Park on June 10th for all those living in Northern Nevada. You will be able to learn more about Parkinson’s and how you can help. Every nine minutes there is a new diagnosis of PD, so that means that in April alone nearly 5,000 people in this country will learn they have PD. This is a tough disease as there is no treatment, therapy, or drug to slow or stop it from going.
