Renovating after Retirement

Moving to a new home after retirement? Free time can be a great opportunity to renovate your bathrooms!

Upon retirement, you may find yourself with loads of time on your hands (which, if I’m correct is the exact reason for retirement?) and what better way to spend your days than finally heading up those remodeling projects you’ve been putting off! First on the list, that pesky bathroom at which you turn a blind eye.

Bathrooms can seem daunting because you don’t want them to seem kitschy or of a theme, so some revert to just ignoring the space when it comes to interesting textiles and decor. Don’t let them best you, use the 10 easy tips and tricks below to turn your space from drab to fab!

1. Shaped Tile: Opt for a shaped tile other than square or rectangular for a more interesting floor. Choose decor in colorful patterns that go with your tile, but try not to match the shape as this will look dated.

2. Organic Touches: Porcelain, glass and metals usually take up a majority of the materials used in a bathroom. Try adding some wood accents, such as stools or a lamp, fringed or macramé textiles, and even woven baskets. Another option would be to go for a driftwood mirror in lieu of the classic metal medicine cabinet. Do not over-do these materials though, a little bit goes a long way.

3. Interesting Bathtub: Forego the typical rectangular bathtub and go for one that is more visually interesting such as a sculptural tub or one that stands alone. Opt for modern and fun hardware to go along with your bathtub as this will further the look for which you are striving.

4. Wood-like Shiplap Siding: For more of beachy vibe, swap out your stucco’d walls for white shiplap nautical siding that appears to be wood, but is water proof and perfect for bathroom walls. Pair this with gray hued tile or natural wood for a nautical themed bathroom that’s not kitschy or over-the-top.

5. Herringbone Patterned Tile Floor: Instead of opting for the traditional straight lines or checked pattern of  a normal tile floor, angle the tiles in a way that mimics the herringbone fabric pattern. Usually less expensive than a wood floor option, this tile pattern adds dimension and interest to a bathroom with expertly tasteful simplicity.

6. Beach Glam: Glittered back-splashes and sparkling sconces add a new dimension of shine and specialness to an otherwise lack-luster bathroom. Match the level of femininity without going over-board by using simple white flowers or floral patterns throughout.

7. Brightly Colored Tile: Brightly hued mosaic tiles, alongside a modern and clean-lined bathroom, can be a breath of fresh air. Who doesn’t love a pop of color? Accessorize with simple, white pieces to keep the space fresh and modern.

9. Get Nautical: A bathtub with an iron exterior, wooden floors with clean white walls, and sea-inspired lighting can emphasize the nautical sense of a space without it becoming too much. Add navy accents and accessories sparingly for a nautical feel, rather than a nautical theme.

10. Customize It: Put your money towards customized pieces such as a vanity, medicine cabinet or bathtub, and your money will be well spent. These pieces can make the space feel extremely modern and personalized, while adding ample storage if needed.
