Motels in Reno are going to be undergoing a lot of changes, and they’re all for the better! Blighted motels in Reno have been a growing problem, so Mayor Schieve plans to solve the issue. Motels are a very important to tourism in Reno but also as a new short term living solution. As rent For housing and apartments has gone up, people use motels as an option. Schieve wants to tackle the issue by approaching motel business owners about upholding to certain standards.
Schieve wants to get all motels in Reno up to establishment code.
The issue is that they lack basic living essentials, and most have said they’re basically just a bedroom. This is something that Reno City Council is glad to finally change. Local motels have been a big contributor of blight in the community. Schieve said that motels are lacking kitchenettes, not changing the linens or fixing plumbing among other issues. Motels have become homes to some, and therefore motels need to be completely livable.
The mayor is working with the city council and the Reno Housing Authority to enact ordinances that require motel owners to provide certain amenities for their tenants. Schieve said if owners have multiple code violations, city officials will be able to come in, make repairs, and leave the bill with the operator. This project is the start of her “Blight Buster” initiative to clean up downtown and bring more housing to Reno. As a start, crews are demolishing a vacant motel at 4275 W. Fourth Street. Themotel has been vacant for about 6 months and S3 Development Co. plans to build 164 new apartments at that location. The mayor is excited to replace blighted spots with nice housing to drop crime rates while improving housing availability.
