New Sidewalk Art Around Reno
Written by: Farah Vitale
Reno is filling the sidewalks with art.
The projects created by the City of Reno are create a sense of movement and vibrancy to Reno. The goal is to add as much artwork to the city as possible. In August, local artist, Bahareh Shahrabi Farahani painted murals on the sidewalks near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Washington Street. The murals, “Comings and Goings,” create a visual of people moving around the city. Some are catching a bus and some are going to dinner. When people look down at the murals, they identify with the movement of their town.
Farahani graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree in May 2016 from the University of Nevada, Reno. Her award winning art work is also displayed throughout Iran, where she is originally from and the the Middle East. Farahani volunteered but the City of Reno paid for her art supplies.
The city isn’t stopping there.
Reno’s art scene continues to evolve and isn’t limited to downtown. An artist from Berkeley, Todd Collins, put a cursive script along the sidewalk of the Truckee River as part of the Reimagine Reno campaign.
The prose is called “Confluence” and the content comes from the artist’s research on science and his conversations with biologists. He shares information about the dynamics of water in mountain ecosystems and changing climates relating to the mountain landscape. The city is going to leave the curve prose for six months and see how it holds to the cement.
Reno City Council wants the artwork in the city to resonate with locals and to create a dialogue. Placing art in specific areas such as a sidewalk creates a “flow” from different parts of the city. They are striving to make the Biggest Little City even more unique.
