Murals Fill Up Reno

Written By: Farah Vitale

Murals have been spreading throughout Midtown and making their way downtown. The murals are all over the place, covering fences, alleyways and on the walls of businesses. The goal of these murals is to help stop graffiti and give life to our city that is continuing to fill up with amazing art. Recycled Records has a special mural of a man with a piano. That one in particular was painted as part of Spray Positive, an anti-graffiti program.

Spray Positive creates murals for businesses that have been targets for taggers.

They take kids interested in art or tagging, and help them create artwork. They want the kids who would love to put art on buildings and give them a way to be creative. The Children’s Cabinet, the City of Reno and the Reno Police Department have all helped with this program. They spend an average of $250,000 a year on the graffiti problem.

The city wants to help enforce the artist code – leave other’s art alone and if you see a white wall, it’s your canvas. They want taggers to create a mural as opposed to tagging the back of a business building. This program has done a good job thus far in achieving their goals. The city has been flourishing with more art and creativity than ever before. This is a cool way to give kids a pride in their community. It’s a rippling effect of art in Reno. The more you see, the more that’s created.
