Kids Helped Out With the Big Dig Fundraiser

Written By: Farah Vitale

The “Big Dig” fundraiser gave kids a chance to help out. During the event, children were allowed to operate up to 35 pieces of heavy equipment. This included excavators, bulldozers, frontloaders and more with the help of a professional. The “Big Dig” has been around for about 20 years and they’ve raised more than $2 million since they started. Local businesses including Granite Construction, Cashman Equipment and Rilite Aggregate all worked together to create the project.

The Big Dig, normally invitation only, is now open to the public.

This is a fun family event and will give kids the opportunity to help out. The event was a success and a a whole lot of fun in the process. The tickets were $100 to benefit the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society has been working hard to fight and end cancer. With your support, they have helped usher in an era of more people surviving cancer than ever before. After putting their research and findings into action, they saw a 20% decline in US cancer death rates since the early 1990s.

The Big Dig is a now a tribute to the Jeff Sweeney, who passed away in 2013. He was a longtime fixture in the Reno construction industry and supporter of the Big Dig. Jeff worked at the Cashman Equipment Company, mostly as a salesman, for 25 years. He loved seeing new generations help out in the Big Dig. His memory was honored during the Big Dig, where his friends and family paid tribute to him.
