City Council Approves Downtown Management Organization
Written By: Farah Vitale
The Reno City Council approved a Downtown Management Organization (DMO) to work on making downtown Reno even better. The DMO will create a brand new team that will help police officers to focus on issues like vagrancy, panhandling and homelessness. Due to the close distance to the University, downtown Reno has a great potential for entrepreneurship and innovation. The team will be working hard to make the most of all the amazing sectors of downtown and clean up it’s image. The downtown river is one of Reno’s best milestones and they want to keep progressing with housing nearby.
They also plan to connect the University to downtown Reno.
It’s important to the City Council that Reno intersects students and the University to downtown Reno. That means improving walk-ability south of I-80 along with other improvements to get students into that area. There will be many short-term fixes coming this summer and this year but long-term goals will always stay in effect. This will be an exciting project to benefit the city as a whole. There will be ambassadors and caseworkers that will work to help to the homeless find resources.
Revitalizing downtown has always been a goal. But actually hiring a team made just for this will speed it up and hit all the issues. With gaming and tourists centered there, it really is the heart and sole image of Reno. So as this project goes on, livability will progress, blight will decrease, a possible dog park on the train trench, easier biking lanes, and better signage.
