Reno-Tahoe is prepared to host Winter Olympics, 2026 if the request is made. We are one of three U.S. regions mentioned as possible contenders for the future Winter Olympics; the other two being Denver and Salt Lake City. Squaw Valley hosted the winter games about 60 years ago. Although the United Stated Olympic Committee has not contacted Reno-Tahoe yet, they are standing by.

The Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition is in contact with the USOC and the International Olympic Committee.

The reasons for one destination being picked over the other has to do with a number of different factors. They include: environment, infrastructure, and a plan to sustain and repurpose venues. Also, hotels, security, airport, transportation, and highway access are very important factors for the actual stay. The Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition all agree Lake Tahoe/Squaw Valley fit the criteria and a plan is ready to be presented to USOC if chosen.

Squaw Valley hosted games in 1960 making Lake Tahoe the second longest Winter Olympic legacy in the U.S. next to Lake Placid, New York. They hosted in 1932 and 1980. So the 1960 winter games changed Squaw Valley into an internationally famous winter sports hot-spot. People all over the nation became captivated by the beauty of Lake Tahoe.
