Attorney General Laxalt allocated 1.2 million dollars to University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine to create an OB/GYN department. This department would provide education for medical and training for students and care residents. The funding is in part of lawsuit settlement against Pfizer pharmaceutical company and the State of Nevada. UNR Med will recieve 3.8 million over the next five years as a result of Pfizer had unlawfully promoted hormone therapy prescriptions .
Nevada is making women’s health a priority
Previously, Nevada medical students could only receive women’s health training in Vegas. Surely, exciting things are underway for Northern Nevada.
“Having a department dedicated to research and the education of students and physicians in their understanding of women’s health ensures we are delivering the best care for patients,” said Dr. Neda Etezadi-Amoli, interim chairwoman of the department.
In addition to facilitating research and training, Laxalt believes the department is an superb investment to bridge the physician shortage gap. To clarify research shows physicians are more likely to reside in locations they can continue their training.
“Creating a new OB/GYN department sets the foundation for continued improvement in this area and makes a strong statement for the importance that women’s health has to a healthy Nevada,” said UNR Medical School Dean Dr. Thomas Schwenk.
