Got Library Fines? Donate to the Food Bank Instead

Written By: Farah Vitale

The Washoe County Library wants you to settle your fines with donations to the Food Bank rather than pay. There will be barrels available at every library location for you to donate. So if your realizing you have some unpaid fines on overdue books, stop by the library and donate bring cans or boxes of non-perishable food, rather than money. The program runs through the end of April and everyone is welcome to donate and help out.

You can bring one food item donation for each overdue library item or fine.

You cannot, however use food to cover lost or damaged materials. All the food will be delivered to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. But the donations to the Incline Village Library go to support Project MANA. They work to reduce the incidence of hunger and its detrimental effects upon individuals, families, the community and the region. They also developed programs designed to alleviate the causes of hunger and promote nutrition through education and awareness.

There are certain items of food that needed the most at the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. They are: canned meats, fish and peanut butter; boxed macaroni & cheese and pasta meals; powdered milk, baby formula and baby food; complete meals in a can such as stew, chili, ravioli, or hearty soups; canned fruits, juices, and vegetables; and dry cereal, oatmeal, rice, and pasta. The Washoe County library’s previous spring food drives have been a huge success the last few times so they are excited to continue with more drives.
