Local Artist Creates New Mural
Written By: Farah Vitale
Local muralist, Joe C. Rock, has been creating art all around Reno and everyone loves it. He painted about 30 murals so far. Most are along the business walls around Midtown Reno and Wells Avenue. His latest mural is a beautiful scene of Mount Rose on the north wall of the DeLuxe apartments on the south end of Well’s Avenue. The mural depicts the view of the mountains from someone looking through a rose bush with leafs draping from above.
The City Of Reno is using public art as a way to stop graffiti.
Since taggers normally respect murals, the city is happy to have more art on buildings. It’s also a chance to let artists get paid for their art work. Rock has now been able to set higher prices for his art. The first half of his murals he did for free. Making a living off his art isn’t easy so he also works at Junkee’s in Midtown.
They were also the first ones to give him his first mural, right along the Junkee’s building. Rock said he’s not quite sure he wants to. He said once he only paints as an income source, it will feel like a job and he won’t be able to enjoy. it. He wants to keep his passion for it alive. Being a mural artist means working around weather conditions and also unsteady work. His last mural before the Mount Rose one in November, was during the summer. Although his work schedule isn’t steady, Rock is happy to give something back to the community and be apart of Reno’s stunning transformation.
