Reno Agrees to Professional Minor Hockey League
Written By: Farah Vitale
Hockey comes to Reno! Reno will have it’s own professional minor hockey league starting in 2018.The Reno City Council approved a 10 year agreement with the Reno Puck Club to create the league. The agreement allows the Reno Puck Club up to 5.7 million dollars in expenses through public-private partnerships. This includes a professional ice surface of a 200-feet long by 85-feet wide rink at the Reno Events Center. They also need locker rooms, a new elevator and will be responsible for other repairs to the Reno Events Center. There is not fund agreement from the city.
Reno’s last hockey team was the Reno Renegades in 1998.
The new team would compete in the ECHL, the East Coast Hockey League, in October 2018. The ECHL is an AA league based in New Jersey. It’s one tier below the AA hockey league and both are officially recognized as hockey minor leagues by the NHL. The West Coast Hockey League stopped operating after completing its season in 2002-03. The teams formerly on WCHL, along with Las Vegas, joined as expansion teams for the ECHL’s in 2003-04 during their 16th season.
The ECHL does not hold a draft like the National Hockey League. This means each team are responsible for recruiting and signing their players. If interested in playing, players should contact the manager or coach of each team. So players interested in the Reno team will have to wait until the team is approved by the ECHL and contact the Reno Puck Club.
